new construction
completed 2024
This project prompted the construction of a new home in San Clemente for a professional surfer and his growing family. At 4,128sf, this project features three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms, with a master suite, gym, and spectacular entertaining spaces. The design of the home presented an opportunity for an enthusiastic collaboration with the clients and our project team from the very beginning. The home was designed with longevity in mind, with fire resistant construction and landscaping to coexist with its natural surroundings. The first floor features an outdoor shower and a laundry room off of the garage, allowing for an easy rinse-off after work. With a 9-5 at Trestles, being able to spot waves from the backyard became a large draw of this property for our client.
The rear of the home offers generous views of the coastline and coastal canyons draping across San Clemente. With this in mind, the project subverts the typical separation of public and private spaces by placing the entertainment spaces of the home on the second floor to maximize these views. A grand entry with a custom pivot door draws guests forward to a set of floating stairs framed by a full height window. Guests are elevated to the heart of the home, featuring an open plan kitchen and living area surrounded by full height glass in every direction. A statement fireplace creates a cozy moment within the space, and is framed by views through full-height windows on either side. Large sliding glass doors pocket into the walls to create a seamless indoor-outdoor connection, and emphasize the large deck spaces at the front and the rear of the home. A second staircase draws guests to the 917sf rooftop deck, providing an outdoor kitchen and unobstructed views of San Clemente. Interior materials were carefully selected in collaboration with the clients, with an emphasis on creating an inviting, organic space.
